Automatic Reply

I will never forget an article I read in the Wall Street Journal about a bold letter that Rick Warren, pastor/author, from Saddleback Church in Orange County, CA wrote to his congregation. It was near the end of 2009, and he sent out this plea, “This is an urgent letter unlike any I’ve written in 30 years. On the last weekend of 2009, our total offerings were less than half of what we normally receive—leaving us $900,000 in the red for the year; unless you help make up the difference today and tomorrow” (Wall Street Journal, 5-7-10).

How would we react to a letter like that? Would we respond with a contribution or instead some sort of “automatic reply” like: “I sure hope ‘they’ get the money ‘they’ need.” Or, “I have already given—it is time for the rest of ‘these people’ to step up.” Or perhaps even, “Times are tough—and I don’t know what the church needs that much money for anyway.”

One of the issues the church faces today is that we have too many “automatic replies.” When we are challenged to do something or give something out of our comfort zone, we tend to “automatically” think we can’t do it. We don’t have enough to give, or we can’t make a difference. When we think this way, we underestimate the miraculous power of the Lord at work in and through us.

However, throughout Scripture we see one example after another where Jesus can take little and make much of it. This should not only provide us hope in the midst of all circumstances but also courage to step out in obedience to the Lord. If Jesus can feed more than 4,000 people after starting with seven loaves and a few fish, then surely, He can qualify the unqualified (Matthew 15: 29-39).

I wonder if His disciples shared the compassion of the One they said they would follow. In fact, did they even really believe that Jesus had the ability to do more than humanly possible? They said, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?” But as Jesus often does, He saw the situation differently. Jesus saw this as a teachable moment for His disciples and the great crowds. And so, He asked "the question." The question that I believe He poses to you and me every single day of our lives: “How many loaves do you have?”

As one commentary notes, “The disciples are counting only the realities that impress them, not the Reality that should impress them most.” Disciples should always add One (Dale Bruner, The Churchbook, p. 68).

How will you “count” on Jesus to empower you to do more than you thought you could?

Incidentally, “After Pastor Rick Warren’s end-of-year appeal, Saddleback members — an estimated 10% of whom were unemployed — ended up contributing some $2.4 million to keep the church operating. Mr. Warren said the money would go toward the church’s ministries, which include feeding more than 200,000 people.”

When Jesus saw the “great crowds,” His reply, seemingly automatic, was: “I have compassion for these people.”

What will be our REPLY?

Peace,

Trey

READY Update: October 10

We are so grateful for your continued patience and understanding as our Grace campus is being READIED to be a welcoming place, a relevant space, and to extend Grace! We hope you share our excitement and anticipation as we see the various construction projects in progress! The latest transformations include:

  • The Founders’ Chapel: The chapel renovation is complete other than lighting and furniture that will be installed in the next couple of weeks. Our new chapel pew cushions have arrived and look beautiful.
  • Parking Lot: We will not do any more parking lot work until the end of November.
  • New South Porte-Cochere: Work has begun. Important to note that the sidewalk between the Music Suite and the Learning Center has been demolished and access is limited to a fenced walkway. We recommend if you need handicapped accessibility, please park on the North side of campus or by the Molly Ann Smith building. Construction will continue until mid-November.
  • Music Suite: The work here is substantially complete, and the bathrooms will be completed within the week.
  • Massey-Tucker Fellowship Hall, First floor restrooms: Renovations on the Massey Tucker first floor restrooms are complete with the exception of the Family Restroom, which will complete by mid-November.
  • Massey-Tucker Fellowship Hall, First floor: The new wall between Massey-Tucker Hall Room C and the Church Kitchen that will enable Massey-Tucker C to be used more effectively as a meeting space and classroom has been started. The McKechnie Room renovations are complete, and furniture will be installed over the next month.
  • Massey-Tucker, Third floor: Carpeting and paint renovations in the individual offices are complete. The renovation of the new work area and the new conference room started this week and should be completed over the next two weeks. The breakroom and central hallway will be started late October.
  • Welcome Center: The construction of the new Welcome Center (in the space which was the library) is underway and is expected to be completed by December 8. Important Note: The old entrance under the Porte-Cochere is now closed and you will enter by the Receptionist Desk. If you need a handicapped accessibility route, a new temporary ramp has been installed between the receptionist desk and narthex.
  • Sanctuary: Construction in the narthex and the Sanctuary is expected to begin on October 27. Our goal is to have both completed by our anniversary celebration on December 8. * Please note our temporary worship venue changes for Sundays, November 3 through December 1.

Serve on the READY Construction Hospitality Team

We have a wonderful opportunity for you to serve the Grace family and our guests on Sunday! The good news is that it is a brief time commitment, a limited duration, requires very little training, and is a way to contribute to making your Grace a welcoming place. It's an easy – and especially important – way to invest in the life and ministry of Grace.

You are invited to help smooth the worshippers’ path on Sunday morning by volunteering for the READY Construction Hospitality team. We need 8 volunteers for each of the Sunday morning worship hours through December 8. Find more information by clicking HERE.

Deacons and Elders

Last week new officers were elected for the deacons and the elders. A few members have asked the question, “What is the difference between the two?”  This a great question!

Here’s a simple way to describe the difference between the two:

The elders are our leaders elected by the congregation who serve along with the pastors to govern the church and oversee the spiritual health of the congregation as well as the congregation’s faithfulness to God’s mission.

The deacons are our leaders elected by the congregation who serve to provide care, express compassion, and foster connections within our Grace faith family.

Andrea Jaber Retires

Andrea Jaber, our Director of Traditional Worship, is retiring. Andi, upon retiring from Houston Community College initially accepted our interim position and then had graciously stayed on for almost a year. We have been so blessed with her gifts of creativity and musical talents. As we begin the search for an interim director, Andrea Montano-Renderos, former alto soloist, will be filling in for the new few weeks.

Grace at 50: Fun Fact

Over the next couple of months as we look toward our Grace at 50 celebration on Sunday, December 8, we are going to share some “fun facts” from the past 50 years at Grace. Look for these fun facts about Grace in Grace Weekly, the worship bulletins, and social media!

Here’s this week’s fun fact:

If our parent church, Lamar Street Church (1876-1886) was still located in downtown Houston, we would be worshipping at Discovery Green.

Next time you're visiting Discovery Green, think about the five charter members and Rev. Donald MacGregor for continuing to worship and building the first church in 1876 on the corner of Lamar and Crawford.
