Welcome
According to Phillip Johnson, a widely-acclaimed American architect, “the most important part of any structure is the ‘goes-into.’ The ‘goes-into’ is that place where a person enters the building. It’s what determines their first impression and dramatically shapes their entire experience of the structure.”
These were the words that caught my attention in an article from Leadership Journal. According to the article: “The ‘goes-into’ in a building is what… the tee shot is to golf; the opening is to a speech; the overture is to a symphony; and the first impression is to a new relationship” (Charles Arn titled: “The Power of a Good Greeting”; Leadership Journal; Volume 33 Number 4, p. 63).
As you are aware and as a result of your generosity to our READY campaign, we are inching ever closer to renovating our ‘goes-into’ space here at Grace. In fact, it looks as though the construction will begin in mid-June. When completed, I am convinced that our physical space will absolutely be a more welcoming place.
However, here is the truth—physical space can never accomplish what a personal touch can. In other words, whenever people choose to come “into” Grace, all of you will be the more effective ‘goes-into’ people of Grace. To all who walk through our church doors, we each have the opportunity to influence whether people feel welcome or distant. We have an opportunity to make Jesus visible every Sunday.
We all crave to be appreciated. We all desire to feel noticed in some way. My hope for Grace is that whoever it is that chooses to worship with us, serve with us, grow with us—that they will feel the love and joy of Christ. That each person will have a positive Grace experience as they experience the amazing grace of God.
As you prepare to come to Grace each Sunday, will you also prepare your heart to be an ambassador for Christ? As you make your way to your favorite pew, will you also look for someone you do not know and introduce yourself and let them know that you are glad they are here? As you consider the struggles and challenges in your own life, will you be mindful that there are others around you feeling similar emotions. Perhaps a smile would go a long way?
Quite simply, never underestimate the power of a warm welcome!
In advance, thank you for your part in making Grace a welcoming place.
Peace, Trey |

July 21: Senior Commissioning Dinner
To show our appreciation to our graduates this year, we have planned two very special events just for them: recognition during worship in May and a family dinner in July. The dinner, which is planned for later in the summer, gives us an amazing opportunity to honor our Seniors well and share the ways that we’d like to keep in touch with them. We’ll also introduce them to the College Elders and chat about life after High School. This also will be an opportunity to honor our Seniors and their families with dinner, conversation, and fellowship. For more information, contact Matt Davis (mdavis@gpch.org; 713-267-8704). Become a Mentor & Impact the Life of a Middle School Student Forever!
For the past seven years, Grace Presbyterian Church has partnered with Paul Revere Middle School to provide adults the opportunity to mentor students. Mentoring, at its core, guarantees students that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with daily challenges, and reminds students that they matter. Research confirms that mentoring has a powerful positive effect on students personally, academically, and on their future dreams. Signing up involves three easy steps: filling out an application, completing a background check, and having a placement conversation. For more information or to speak to a member of the leadership team, please click HERE .
