An Act of Love

The saying goes: “When you love someone, you desire for them more than is in your power to give them — therefore, we pray.”

We live in a world that, in my opinion, is in desperate need of love. However, not everyone is ready to be loved. By that I mean that all of us have our own “issues” that can be obstacles to truly receiving another’s love and perhaps even God’s love for us in Jesus Christ.

The beautiful thing about prayer is that we can love others without them even knowing it. We can pray for our server at lunch or the cashier in the grocery store or a friend who is going through a difficult time. The point is, there is nothing stopping us from daily acts of love through prayer.

Today is the National Day of Prayer, a wonderful opportunity to put our daily acts of love into practice. Additionally, you may choose to click HERE for additional resources to guide you in your prayer today and in the days to follow.

I received an email from a Grace member who is traveling. He wrote, “We are traveling in England for another 10 days. A few days back we were at the Wells Cathedral when the clock struck the hour. One of the ministers offered a couple of prayers on the hour. One was an old, old prayer authored by Bishop Thomas Ken (1637-1711). It seems meaningful in today’s world.”

I thought I would share the prayer with you: “O God, make the door of this house wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship and a heavenly Father’s care and narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and hate. Make its threshold smooth enough to be no stumbling-block to children, or to straying feet, but rugged enough to turn back the tempter’s power: make it a gateway to thine eternal kingdom. Amen.”

Together, let us join our hearts as we boldly embody acts of love as we pray for our nation, community, leaders, friends, enemies and one another.

I am grateful for you, and you remain in my prayers.

Peace,

Trey

May Encore Trip: Butler Longhorn Museum and Kemah Boardwalk Tour

May 8, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Think of Texas, and you think of Longhorns: ponderous cattle with horns as wide as a man is tall. From the western art of Charles M. Russell to the University of Texas mascot, the Longhorn is synonymous with Texas and its long ranching history. Yet few Texans or visitors to this state realize that at the beginning of the 20th century, Longhorns were on the verge of extinction. Today, the Longhorn is alive and well thanks to the efforts of six pioneer breeders and a few far-sighted federal employees, who refused to allow these animals to become extinct. The Butler Longhorn Museum tells the story of this amazing comeback, and in doing so, tells a compelling chapter in the story of the American West. Following the museum tour, we will enjoy lunch at a place of your choosing and then enjoy shopping on the famous Kemah Boardwalk until 3 p.m. The cost of the museum tour is $10. To register, contact Becky Morris (bmorris@gpch.org; 713-267-5091).

High School Seniors!

May 12: Senior Recognition in Worship
July 21: Senior Commissioning Dinner

To show our appreciation to our graduates this year, we have planned two very special events just for them: recognition during worship in May and a family dinner in July. The dinner, which is planned for later in the summer, gives us an amazing opportunity to honor our Seniors well and share the ways that we’d like to keep in touch with them. We’ll also introduce them to the College Elders and chat about life after High School. This also will be an opportunity to honor our Seniors and their families with dinner, conversation, and fellowship. For more information, contact Matt Davis (mdavis@gpch.org; 713-267-8704). To submit Senior photos and register for the dinner, please click HERE.

Mentoring, at its core, guarantees students that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with daily challenges, and reminds students that they matter. Research confirms that mentoring has a powerful positive effect on students personally, academically, and on their future dreams. Signing up involves three easy steps: filling out an application, completing a background check, and having a placement conversation. For more information or to speak to a member of the leadership team, please click HERE
