Wise Chickens
Does the phrase, “Running around like a chicken with its head cut off” resonate with you? I suspect that we have all referenced this emotion a time or two in our lifetimes. We have found ourselves so pressured by the busyness of life that we frantically run around in an attempt to get it all done. And when we don’t accomplish it all, we feel in a state of disorder.
I don’t know about you, but I do not do well with disorder. When I am running around like a chicken with its head cut off, some part of my life is predictably in disorder. It could be family—perhaps not spending the quality of time with them that I should. It might be personal care—not allowing myself physical and emotional rest. Disorder can also manifest itself in agitation toward others or perhaps even depression or a sense of failure. When the norm of life is “running,” we rarely have time to be still. But also, when we are constantly running to fulfill our own ambitions, it is next to impossible for us to consider the needs of anyone else.
James 3:17 says, “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure, then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”
Here is what I know to be true about my life, I tend to live on the run. Perhaps the same is true for you as well? However, we can be wise when we are running. We can be people with moral and spiritual integrity. While we traverse the topography of the world around us, there should be a transparency of Whose we are. We must not allow our running to hinder us from winning people to Christ. Our sincerity should be displayed with complete clarity rather than being hidden by our agendas.
Quite simply—we should be “Wise Chickens.”
Eugene Peterson’s translation of James 3:17-18 is insightful. He writes, “Real wisdom, God’s wisdom, begins with a holy life and is characterized by getting along with others. It is gentile and reasonable, overflowing with mercy and blessings, not hot one day and cold the next, not two-faced. You can develop a healthy, robust community that lives right with God and enjoy results only if you do the hard work of getting along with each other, treating each other with dignity and honor.”
My hope and prayer for us, during these last couple of weeks of Lent, is that we will be intentional in doing the necessary “hard work.”
I hope attending worship this Sunday at Grace is on your schedule. See you then.
Peace,
Trey
