What a Shocker
Since 1950 they have proudly served a “bigger, better burger.” However, if you study their history, you will learn that over the decades they have gone through tragedy, difficult times, and even a change of leadership. But through it all, they stuck to what got them there. More than six decades ago, an adventurous and determined entrepreneur named Harmon Dobson had a bold idea: to serve a burger so big that it took two hands to hold, and so good that after a single bite, customers couldn’t help but exclaim: “What a burger!”
I am still trying to process the announcement made last week about the investment firm based in Chicago, BDT Capital Partners, that is acquiring a majority stake in OUR beloved Texas tradition. News like this can send us into a tailspin that's riddled with questions. Are they going to take away my favorite: the number 4? Are we still going to have spicy ketchup? Will I still be able to “whatasize” my meal? How could this be? What a shocker!
According to an article I read, Ed Nelson, who will become the new president of Whataburger on July 1, said in a statement that sales are up in Texas since news of the sale broke. “I want all our Texas customers to know we are still very much a Texas brand — the Lone Star State has always been home for us, and it would be crazy to change what our customers love most,” Mr. Nelson said.
The chief executive of BDT Capital Partners, Byron Trott, said in a statement that his firm was interested in Whataburger precisely because of the Texas-size loyalty of its fans. “We want to ensure Whataburger is around for decades to come to serve its customers and communities,” he said.
Here is my point: change is inevitable in life; how we face it is paramount.
Ephesians 4:20-21 reminds us, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever!”
I would like to reiterate something I said to the Grace family five years ago: when situations arise in our lives that are not exactly how we had hoped they would be, we must “whatasize” our faith by trusting the One who will stick with us through them all. The God who is so big and so full of love for us and so full of vision and provision for His church that He promised to hold us in the palm of His hands. What a God!
Friends, I pray we will continue to welcome the fullness of God into our lives. It is the fullness of God in our lives that gives us the courage to ask, “What now?” as if to say, “Bring it on” because I know my God is big enough. In fact, when we live with such bold faith and trust, it may leave others saying, “What a shocker.”
Then again, God is God and we are not.

Back to School
Supply Drive
As the Back-to-School season approaches, we will again partner with Walnut Bend Elementary to help students start the year with the supplies they need. You can be a blessing and help brighten up the school year for kids and families by donating items from the list below or a monetary donation which will be used to purchase supplies. Donations will be collected through Sunday, August 11 in labeled bins outside the Grace library. Monetary donations for the “School Supply Drive” can be made to Grace Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning or dropped off at the reception desk during the week.
