Everything, Every Day

What are you reading this summer? I don’t know why, but that question always seems to be asked this time of year. I think it gives credence to the reality that things tend to “slow down” for people in the summer, freeing up time to dive into a good book.

I have just finished one book titled Saturate by Jeff Vanderstelt. I recommend it if you have not already read it—interestingly enough he uses language similar to that we have been using over the past several years around Grace. The book focuses on “Being Disciples of Jesus in the Everyday Stuff of Life.” Of course, we like to refer to that as Living to Make Jesus Visible

There are two more books I am going to read this summer, both given to me as gifts: The Hammer of God by Bo Giertz and Still Wrestling: Faith Renewed Through Brokenness by Les Ferguson. I am certain I will have more to share at a later date about these two books. For now, I want to share a quote from Saturate. Vanderstelt writes, “Jesus didn’t call us to merely make a decision for him. He doesn’t need our vote of approval. He doesn’t want deciders. He wants disciples—people who are devoted to becoming more and more like him in everything, every day” (p.86). So, here is another question for your consideration this summer: How are you becoming more and more like Him in everything, every day?

My prayer for Grace is that we will be devoted to becoming more like Jesus. This will become evident in how we treat one another and how we navigate adversities and challenges in our lives. It will also be visible in our generosity with our financial resources as well as our willingness to serve others. In fact, the possibilities are endless.

Therefore, in the afterglow of the fireworks and the celebration of Independence Day—let’s strive to remain fired up about the gift we have been given to live in dependence on Jesus. Let’s strive to grow daily in our awareness of our need for Jesus in all aspects of our lives. But also, let’s remember that Jesus is ready and willing to meet us where we are—He is never on vacation! When we do so, it will have a transformational impact on everything, every day.

One final reminder, The Rev. Dr. David McKechnie and Linda McKechnie will be joining us at Grace this Sunday. I hope you will provide them with a warm welcome and remind them of how much you love your current senior pastor (ha, ha—just kidding). Seriously, Dave and Linda have been instrumental in the life and history of Grace, and I am certainly thankful for them. I know this Sunday will be fabulous!

Peace,

Trey
