A Little Thought
"He Is Able"
It pays to remember! Failing to remember can be very costly. Consider those times in your life when you have forgotten an important birthday or perhaps an anniversary. Maybe you have forgotten a crucial business meeting or event to which you had committed months in advance. It may have been something as mundane as forgetting where you placed your cell phone or car keys. It happens to us all, but never underestimate the significance of remembering.
That is precisely what the Lenten season is about. Remembering the passion of Christ. Remembering the fact that He took an unforgettable journey to the cross. That He gave His life because He remembered you and me. This is a season for us to consider what we should be remembering about who God is and how that impacts our life’s journey.
Jude 24 marks the beginning of the Doxology with five incredibly freeing words: “To him who is able…”
One of the things that has the potential to derail us on life’s journey is failing to remember “He is able!” Our God is the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer of life. Yet, all too often, we forget His promises and His power, instead relying on our own platitudes and processes. The resulting “I’ll try harder” mentality inevitably leaves us exhausted and wanting.
Jude reminds us, “He is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy.”
Rather than trying harder to get things right, what if this Lenten season we rested in the arms of the One who did? Rather than trying harder to be a better Christian, what if we embraced the magnitude of His grace in our lives that is transformational? Rather than spending so much time talking ABOUT God, what if we committed more time to talking WITH Him? You see, the Lord never forgets, He always forgives, and our journey with Him has no end.
I am reminded of the words my cousin, Jim Kelly, penned for me on the day of my ordination service here at Grace back in 2003. He wrote, “Be not afraid of your own tears, for in their glistening they reflect the tender love of the Father for His children. As you allow them to trace the contours of your cheeks, a path of freedom is painted that models an ability to risk a deeper love, an authentic, unpretentious embrace with the One who alone can fill your deepest need, calm your darkest storm, be your greatest joy.”
I needed that reminder! How about you?
I hope you remember to join us on Sunday.
Peace,
Trey
