A Little Thought

"100%"

100% commission! Those were the words that rang through my mind each and every day as a twenty-two-year-old recent graduate of Texas A&M University. I had landed what I considered to be the “dream job.” I was so excited about my future—I knew it was only a matter of time before I became “successful.” But then reality finally hit as those words rang through my mind once more: 100% commission – but if I don’t sell something, I don’t get a paycheck!

As I think back, I can’t believe the choice I made at that time in my life. I CHOSE a career in which the only way I made money was if I called strangers until I found someone who would buy a fixed-income security. When they did—I made a commission. I CHOSE to work on straight commission knowing that if I didn’t sell anything, I didn’t make anything. Risky, yes—but I can honestly say I was never lacking motivation in that job.

In Colossians 1:25 Paul tells the church, “I have become its servant by the COMMISSION God gave me…” Why would Paul include this in a letter that was intended to encourage the church and combat false teachings? He did so to remind the church—the Body of Christ—that they/we are on 100% commission. God gives us this commission. God chooses us. And Paul, by sharing his own testimony, is illustrating to the Colossians that when the Gospel message has impacted your life, you are 100% commissioned by God to become its servant.

Interesting enough, the Greek word for “commission” (where we get our word “economy”) also means “management” or “stewardship.” Paul, who had become a servant, recognized his responsibility to manage his Master’s estate. Paul knew he was charged with the great privilege of carrying the Name of Jesus to the Gentiles and to all ends of the earth. This would be the future of the Church.

Friends, God has also chosen you and me to make known His glorious riches. Having said this, I want to THANK YOU for your RESPONSE thus far to our stewardship campaign. You continue to amaze me in your faithfulness to the Lord and His Church. Additionally, I am thrilled to report that all 55 of our current Elders/Deacons are, in a very tangible way, exhibiting their leadership. There has been a 100% pledge response by our officers. BOOYAH!

From the beginning of time God planned to have Christ live in the heart of each person who believes in Him. When Christ resides in your heart, there is a certainty unlike any other. There is a certainty of the rich hope we have in knowing we belong to Him; that faith in Christ brings the promise of life abundant both now and forevermore. But also, it reminds us that we are the future of the Church.

If you have not yet RESPONDED with your financial commitment, I ask you to please do so. Imagine the possibilities for ministry in and through Grace Church if there is a 100% response from the congregation. You cannot control what others will do, but you can make a decision on what you will do. My hope is the grace of God in Jesus Christ will motivate you to respond.

Again, thank you for your faithfulness and for allowing me the privilege to be part of the Grace family. I am convinced that our future together is bright!

Peace,

Trey
