A Little Thought

"Dawning"

Has it dawned on you that 2017 is near its end? Some are rejoicing who feel like 2017 is a year to forget rather than one to remember – with the exception of the Astro’s World Series Championship! However, the reality is that each year is filled with both struggles and joys. Yet, here we are on the brink of 2018.

With the dawning of a new year comes limitless possibilities and new beginnings. I am looking forward to new beginnings for various ministries and partnerships here at Grace. I am hopeful for new beginnings in exciting ventures for us as a Grace family. If you think about it—God’s grace is all about new beginnings—the old has gone and the new has come. New beginnings are both exciting and life-giving.

Not too long ago, NASA launched its feeblest spacecraft ever, called Dawn. Its target was deep space. The great challenge the scientists faced was providing enough fuel. Conventional rocketry would require an impossible amount of fuel to travel such a great distance. So, the scientists devised a new kind of engine and an alternative fuel. Once the spacecraft escaped earth’s gravity, it switched to a booster that accelerated at the nearly immeasurably slow rate of 15 mph per day. That’s why NASA described it as its feeblest spacecraft. But if you do the math, you discover that by continuing to accelerate at 15mph/day, you will eventually reach Dawn’s cruising speed of 24,500 mph, making it one of NASA’s fastest spacecrafts. Small deeds sustained over long days have astonishing potential. (Dave Peterson, Receiving and Giving—Unleashing the BLESS Challenge in Your Life, 22)

Friends, as we embark on our journey into the new year, I want to encourage you to be energized and fueled by the love of Christ. Likewise, I want to challenge you to be people of blessing in all aspects of your life—remembering that “small deeds sustained over long days have astonishing potential.” I am convinced, with your help, Grace Presbyterian Church has astonishing potential for continuing to make Jesus visible in the City of Houston and around the world.

In the coming days, as we reflect on all that has happened over the past year, I encourage you to remember the hope we have in Christ both in the good times and the challenging times. I wish you a Happy New Year. I remain optimistic about 2018.

Thank you for your continued trust and faithfulness. It is truly a privilege to be your pastor.

Peace,

Trey

We love our mission partners and missionaries AND we love giving gifts to people at Christmas. This year we can do both at the same time at the first-ever Joy to the World Gift Card Market! You can purchase a gift card on the Grace website gpch.org/giftcard. Put the recipient of your generosity in the driver’s seat to redeem the gift card online with any of our 18 different missionaries and mission partners. Your unique gift enables the recipient to choose something they feel passionate about to receive the ultimate blessing! For more information, contact Becca Lehde blehde@gpch.org
or 713-267-5013.

Students Need You!

With the approaching spring semester, there are still middle school students who need mentors. Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders request a mentor from the social worker at Paul Revere Middle School every week. Will you please give an hour of your time each Friday morning to meet with a student who needs your influence? Play games; encourage the student; listen to them. The time is up before you know it, and you will be looking forward to seeing the student again the following week! Contact Becca Lehde at, blehde@gpch.org or
713-267-5013.

Each year the scholarship fund helps recipients cover the cost of their participation in Grace Student Ministries mission trips.

If you would like to nominate a student for this scholarship, please complete the FORM and return it to Monica Cvejanovich in the Family Ministries department by January 15, 2018.
