Making Headlines
Trey Little
A couple of the Monday morning headlines read, “The West is Won: Astros Clinch First Division Title Since 2001,” and “Astros’ AL West Title Serves as Reminder They Could Still Be Baseball’s Best Team.” Undoubtedly, the news of the Astros’ first division title in sixteen years created a buzz around Houston. Many people wore Astros shirts to work on Monday to show their support. In the midst of the destruction from Hurricane Harvey, the City of Houston is once again managing to find a way to celebrate. Thank you, Houston Astros, for the gift.
The truth is that there is a lot of baseball yet to be played—but the Astros have great potential. Our home team has accomplished much this season, but their eyes are fixed on winning the World Series. The World Series is scheduled to be played October 24 - November 1, given seven games are required to determine the world champions. The Astros are hoping to make the headlines yet again.
In Matthew 25, The Parable of the Talents is a bold reminder that God has given each of us money, time, talents, gifts, influences—all that we are and all that we have is a gift from God. The focus is building up God’s Kingdom and doing His work. This is not the responsibility of a few select individuals but rather the privilege given to all of us who consider ourselves followers of Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ parable, two of the servants IMMEDIATELY went out to invest what the master had given them. They not only did well with their master’s money, they did so enthusiastically and without pause. They didn’t ponder, worry or delay—they just did it. Seemingly, their attitude toward the master was one of faithful response. They knew what the master wanted them to do and they responded expeditiously.
Friends, now is not the time for us to forget the magnitude of our Master. Now is not the time for Grace to throw back the big plans, big dreams, big blessings, big hopes, and big ministry opportunities that God places before us. Instead, today is the day to fix our eyes on what God can do when we TRUST HIM. Now is the time for us to see God’s possibilities and not be limited by our realities. Now is the time for us to invest in others in and through Grace—trusting that we are part of the thread of Grace that will be interwoven with countless lives. Please don’t underestimate the potential of your generosity.

|
None of us will be joining the Astros’ roster for the rest of the season, and likely never. However, all of us are on the Lord’s team and have been put into the game to make headlines. However, the headlines we make are not for ourselves or our glory but instead for the Kingdom and His glory.
|
|
You may remember in Jesus’ parable the words the Master spoke to the faithful servants: “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
That’s the headline I hope to make when the Master calls me home to join Him in victory. How about you?
In the meantime, let’s continue creating a buzz around Houston that we are still part of the best team!
Peace,
Trey
